In June 2014, there were over 60,000 persons for the Live-in Caregiver Program.
Now, only less than 1% of that Live-in Caregiver Program inventory remains.
Canada’s Plan for Caregivers
Canada will admit over 15,000 caregivers as permanent residents.
This is part of their 2024–2026 Immigration Levels Plan.
Recent Caregiver Immigration
- Canada launched the Home Child Care Provider Pilot and the Home Support Worker Pilot in 2019.
- As of April 30, 2024, nearly 5,700 caregivers and their family members have become permanent residents in those pilot programs.
New Caregiver Visas in Canada
Canada has announced new pilot programs to support the migration pathways of caregivers and their families.
- “The new pilot programs will provide home care workers with permanent residence (PR) on arrival in Canada.”
- New pilot programs offer more flexibility for candidates.
- Occupational requirements expanded beyond traditional roles in private homes.
- Caregivers can work for organizations providing temporary or part-time care.
- Programs to be fully launched soon, with more details to follow.
Eligibility Criteria for Caregiver Pilots
Interested candidates must meet specific criteria.
- Language: minimum of CLB level 4
- Education: minimum a certificate equivalent to a Canadian high school diploma
- Experience: recent and relevant work experience
- Job Offer: a job offer for a full-time home care job
These requirements are more relaxed than those of earlier programs. More detailed eligibility criteria will be available soon.
